Dallas Tanner Blogging Here:
Well good morning race fans! Today is day 2 of the Gumball 3000 rally and should prove, as always, to be a quite eventful day. Yesterday Ashley Van Dyke with master co-pilot Eric Ward were so far ahead into the first checkpoint that they didn’t even see another Gumball car for almost 45 minutes! After an impressive start, a brilliant course, and good onboard technology in the car their team was able to have 2 of it’s cars come in to the checkpoint way ahead of everyone else. Unfortunately the Gumball group required drivers to wait (and wait, and wait, and wait some more) at the Buttonwillow race track as the plan was to have 25 cars go out on the track per group and have some wheel to wheel racing. Eric and Ashley took a nap (something often done during a road race of course) and after 2 hours and 45 minutes after arriving at the checkpoint were able to finally get under way and were driving against 20-something other participants who had only been to the checkpoint for as little as 5 minutes before they were able to leave. Ashley and Eric ward with partner car Jack and Daniel in the silver BMW made an impressive run into LA pulling away from all the supercars (in an E-class Mercedes of al things.) Ashley and Eric Ward actually came into LA and finished second in Hollywood and the first car was one that had taken hours to show up at the raeway checkpoint while Ashley VanDyke and Eric Ward were taking a nap.
Today, the 2nd day of the race, we are a bit confused as there are 4 checkpoints in the course of 150 miles? Gumball certainly is not putting on an event like they are known for in the past years. Of course the parties are amazing, the group of participants is one-of-a-kind, and the car collection is unmatched by any other group in the world, but they’re just not putting on the type of event that we’re used to. Today again it looks as though the Gumballers will be forces to stay at menial checkpoints rather than proceeding on to their next destination and receiving a route card upon arrival of a mid-day checkpoint as in a traditional rally. This is turning the most amazing roady rally in the world into nothing more than a traveling car show and a place to be seen for photo opportunities. What happened to the long-distance, high-endurance, high-profile, and fast driving group that the Gumball was known for? Forcing a well-prepared team with a geological advantage they had earned good placement into the events to wait almost 3 hours to let the rest of the pack catch up is kind of like giving all the kids in primary school football an award for playing well with others. Call it a rally or call it a race, folks, but either way the teams should be able to rally and not be forced to have to go down for nappy time while waiting for those other poor guys who just couldn’t find their way so everyone could share, hold hands, and play together.
About Gumball3000
The first Gumball 3000 took place in April 1999, when British creator Maximillion Cooper invited 50 of his friends to take part in a 3000-mile party around Europe to bring together the music, film, fashion and sport industries. Ten years later, and things have certainly grown, with crowds of more than a million people attending the start last year in London, and a televised and online audience that reached more than 60 million in more than 150 countries around the world.
Gumball 3000 consistently hits the headlines as “Cool Britannia’s” most unique addition to pop culture, described by Vanity Fair Magazine as “the most rock ‘n’ roll car rally ever staged” and famed for its exploits and celebrity participation. The event annually attracts stars including Oscar-winning star of the “Pianist” Adrien Brody, “Jackass’s” Johnny Knoxville, Hugh Hefner, supermodels Jodie Kidd and Caprice, “Kill Bill’s” Daryl Hannah, action sports legends Tony Hawk, Matt Hoffman, Carey Hart, and rock stars including Snoop Dogg, Blink 182, 50 Cent, The Fun Lovin’ Criminals, The Happy Mondays, Placebo, Jamiroquai and even Ms. Minogue.
Incorporating a new 3000-mile route each year, the attraction of the Gumball transcends social barriers, appealing to the adventurer in everyone, regardless of status or wealth; combining grease, glamour and guts in equal measures, stretching the experiences of travel and entertainment – just that bit further. Over the past nine years, Gumball 3000 has been hosted by kings and presidents, partied with Snoop Dogg, appeared on the “Jay Leno Show,” raised awareness for testicular cancer, chartered the world’s three largest aircrafts, created untold amount of “Jackass’s” fuelled mayhem, hung out at Hugh Hefner’s mansion, and most recently has been invited to work with the United Nations, all through the language of the motor car.
